Chelsea receive boost in Spanish defender chase
Chelsea have been given the all clear to sign Spanish right-back Cesar Azpilicueta by Ligue 1 club Marseille, according to Talk Sport.
Roberto Di Matteo is seeking to fill the right-back void left by Jose Bosingwa and the 22-year-old, who is currently in England featuring for Spain in the Olympic football tournament, has been their number one target since the January transfer window.
The defender is valued at around £7m by the French side who are willing to sell him in order to open up funds to spend this summer.
“Everybody has to sell before buying,” Les Pocheens sporting director Jose Anigo declared.
Di Matteo has already secured the services of attacking midfielders Oscar, Marko Marin and Eden Hazard this summer but appears eager to give Branislav Ivanovic competition for a starting berth.
Azpilicueta, who joined Marseille from Osasuna in 2010 for £5m, has revealed that he is aware of the reported interest from the Champions League holders but also made clear that he had interest from other top European clubs.
