Tottenham Hotspur’s failure to reach the Champions League could be the reason why Eden Hazard is playing for Chelsea this season and not their London rivals.

The Belgian international has hinted that Tottenham’s entry into Europe’s premier competition – only denied by Chelsea’s Champions League victory in Munich – was the reason why he is not plying his trade at White Hart Lane this season.

Quoted by the Daily Mail, Hazard says: “It’s true that Tottenham tempted me because it was a young team which was third in the league.

“Unfortunately, the end of the season did not go well. They did not reach the Champions League, which tipped the balance.”

Chelsea landed hazard for in advance of £30m from French club Lille and the 21-year-old has began the 2012/13 campaign impressively with six Premier League assists to his name.

Tottenham appear to have found their feet under new manager Andre Villas-Boas recently with two back-to-back league wins.
