Demba Ba’s demands over a new contract at Newcastle United has caused a rift in the club with the striker now being linked with a January switch to Liverpool – reports the Metro.

One of the clubs monitoring Ba’s contract situation in the North East is Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool with the Reds lack of striking options already being well documented and Ba could answer their call come the new year for £7.5m.

The Senegalese international forward is looking to increase his wages from £50,000-a-week but the Magpies are refusing to budge. The hitman’s troubled situation at Newcastle was also publicised after the arrival of Papiss Cisse last January when agent, Alex Gontran, claimed the forward was unhappy with the management at the club.

At the time, Gontran said: “Since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, Demba doesn’t understand the management.

“If he continues to be a substitute all season we will look at other solutions.”

Ba has began the 2012/13 Premier League season in impressive form and continued his fine spell with a double against Reading at the weekend.
