Liverpool are lining up a bid for highly-rated PSV Eindhoven winger Dries Mertens, according to speculation from The Metro.

New Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is eager to add more goals to his side after a disappointing start and the goal-scoring midfielder has recently emerged on his transfer radar as he looks to increase the attacking options at Anfield.

The 25-year-old notched a very impressive 20 goals in just 23 league games last season and has started the new season in the same rich vein of form with four goals in his first five games.

Mertens joined PSV from Utrecht last year and is contracted at the Eredivisie club until 2016 but his £9.7m price tag may still represent good value for money for Rodgers.

Liverpool may yet face competition for his signature with Newcastle also reportedly interest in the Belgian and he is unlikely to be available for transfer in January.
