PSG to rival Manchester United in chase for Colombian starlet

Paris Saint Germain are expected to rival Manchester United in the chase for Porto’s Colombian international James Rodriguez, reports talkSPORT.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s interest in the winger was reported earlier this week, with United scouts said to be watching the player for at least a year. However, it is now believed that big-spending Ligue 1 outfit PSG are ready to join the battle to sign Rodriguez.

The speculation will come as no surprise with Rodriguez having a string of impressive performances for Porto since joining from Argentine side Banfield in 2010 – seeing him likened to Cristiano Ronaldo, in part due to his wonderful technical ability on the ball.

Rodriguez’s form has been nothing short of sensational of late, bagging four goals in nine appearances already this season and scoring five in 14 games for his country – an excellent goal scoring record for someone who doesn’t tend to play as an out-and-out striker. This has thrust the 21-year-old into the limelight and firmly under the watchful eye of Manchester United boss Ferguson as he likes his players to chip in with goals from the wings or midfield, and that appears to be something that Rodriguez does consistently.

Although the Red Devils already have Nani, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia in their squad to run the wings, Nani is reportedly unsettled after a string of disappointing displays, having failed to live up to his supposedly huge potential at Old Trafford.

Whilst a player of undoubted quality, United are believed to be looking to sell the Portuguese international with Juventus waiting in the wings, and Rodriguez is seen as the ideal replacement for the former Sporting Lisbon man.

However, if Ferguson does swoop for Rodriguez, he certainly won’t come cheap. Valued at £16m, he is under contract until 2016, making Porto under no pressure to sell.

Furthermore, reported interest from newly affluent PSG and Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid, Ferguson could face a struggle to land his man – although Rodriguez does have a release clause of £37m, should Ferguson choose to activate it.
